When recruiting prospective students I notice a lot of faculty like to jump in a start talking right away. I prefer to listen to prospective students and find out what questions they have when we have open house events. I find that many students (and parents) already come in with an idea of what they want to get when they visit colleges, questions ready. So when I meet with students and their parents, I don’t like to jump into the sales spiel right away. I like to show the prospective students our labs, our wonderful college students, and let those speak for themselves. And of course listen for the questions.
This year is a weird year. How do you do this? You really can’t. Its almost impossible. I respond to any student question I get, but there are no lab tours, so I haven’t gotten many. So we had the idea of creating a very short video to send to prospective students! We wanted the program to speak for itself.
Firstly, I would like to thank Carissa, Gabi, Katie, Zafir, and Professor Sean Bentley for making material for this video. The department really appreciates it! You are all amazing. Once this corona craziness is over I am inviting you all over for a campfire celebration at our house. Sean Bentley’s video was amazing too. It’s not in the final video cut because the video experts said it didn’t flow right – you will have to wait for the outtakes when it comes out on DVD. The Adelphi University Communications team was amazing as well for helping us with the video last minute and giving us the help we needed to take it to the end.
Most importantly, I would like to thank James St. John. As our lab coordinator, he has really stepped up to the plate. I cannot tell you how proud I am of him being able to keep everything together this semester and to step up to put together a kick-ass video like this with a moment’s notice. Great work Man!
