Today, I was lucky to participate on two different thesis committees; the students were Julianna Yee and Emma Ryan. Emma took two classes with me and I honestly lost track of how many classes Julianna took with me. I am sure its more than four. Emma is a Biology student and does research with my dear friend Professor Eugenia Villa-Cuesta. Julianna worked in this research group before picking up her second major in English (physics was first), ultimately doing a thesis project somewhere between English and Physics. Ultimately Julianna worked with Dr. Michael Matto. Both students were beloved by myself and their entire thesis committees.
In both talks, the thesis discussion was wonderful! Zoom didn’t quell that at all. In fact, it kind of helps being able to have their thesis on one screen and the Zoom meeting on the other screen. I was able to just go from comment to comment on the thesis hitting all the main points. On Julianna’s thesis that is. Emma’s thesis was biology heavy. I only asked a few high-level questions.
The thing I missed was the after thesis discussion and the other students that show up with their unique questions and point of view. I love to celebrate our graduating senior’s success at Adelphi with the entire community. Covid is almost over soon. Until then we will have to make do with using Zoom.
Anyways it is so wonderful to celebrate years of hard work with two of Adelphi’s brightest stars!
This picture is one of my favorite pictures that I have posted on this blog ever – definitely in the top five – if not the best picture. This picture was taken when Julianna was a junior and was the president of the physics club. To me, this picture has always represented the ideal imagine of I want our physics program to be. It was taken during our 2019 Lab for Kids with Westbury High School – an event that Julianna lead. To be this picture IS PERFECT! I could take an hour and point out every little detail I love about this picture, but I think I will let the picture do the talking.
Thank you for four awesome years at Adelphi Julianna! You are amazing!
