Student feedback is important to me. Waiting until the end of the semester to get their evaluations is way WAY too late. Even faculty that do two or three evaluations during the semester is too little. I always try to capture what students are thinking by using a one minute page at the of most classes.

Why? If students are unhappy in class:

  • Sometimes all it takes is a two minute conversation in class why what they are learning is important.
  • Real time changes to the can be made to help the students’ distress.
  • On more than one occasion I have to told the students to buck up, there is only a few more weeks til the semester is over.

In general, more knowledge about your students is better. It should be noted that I try to make these anonymous.

When COVID hit, we needed this more than ever. This teaching technique just slipped away. I couldn’t figure out the right approach. In person, I’d just give them a slip of paper to hand back as they ran out the door.

But again the simplest solution is the usually the right one. I just made a google form with the following essay questions on it. “What did you learn?” and “What’s up?” And it worked perfectly.
