COVID-19 and all Rena Beban, Thomas Grlic (TG3), Sally Lau, and I have been working hard getting the physics maker space ready for after COVID times. We have been focusing on using the Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone Black, and other single-board computers to control external devices. It has been painfully slow. In fact, I just got out of a 2 hour Zoom meeting with them at 9pm.

But nevermind that, the Maker Space had our first outside visitors today. Two of my nieces joined Rosie for a day in the lab. My niece, Hanalei, had to finish her science project. So we put the girls to work building circuits today. IT WAS A BLAST! And Hanalei’s science project is going to be darn good. All I did was teach them how to solder, how to use a battery, and everything Uncle Matt tries doesn’t always work. Hanalei got the thing working almost all on her own. I can’t tell you what it is unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for the science fair.

The girls even said “Best Educational Field Trip Ever!” Honestly today was insanely busy. I went from Zoom meeting to Zoom meeting, meeting with awesome students, coding, helping the girls, etc, etc. BEST DAY EVER! (Oh and Rosie and I spent $140 on tech toys for us to break at home.)

Aliza is definitely excited about laser cooling. She even made a math word problem (though they do stay in the gas phase):

Here are some pictures from the day.
