Ravyn’s thesis is titled “Catching the Covid-19 Pandemic in its Tracks: How Developing a Blog Created an Effective Method for Communicating Scientific Information”. Please read her blog here: https://ravynmalvino.wordpress.com/ Today she defended her thesis! GO RAVYN! WooHoo!
Ravyn’s thesis defense was wonderful! Straightforward, clear, relevant, and perfect! It was a great discussion and one of my more happier moments at Adelphi. Seriously Matt Lavery, Barbara Cunningham, and Ravyn Malvino are definitely three of my best peeps at Adelphi. It was an amazing hour.
For the last year, Ravyn I, and a large supporting cast (such as Professor Cunningham from Biology, Zoya Shafique (‘2020) and Paul Russell (‘2022)), have been diving into current events surrounding Covid and Environmentalism. Ravyn has been writing blog after blog on these topics. It has been an excellent journey. And her thesis was wonderful.
Ravyn’s backstory is awesome. Through the help of some key faculty and staff at Adelphi, Ravyn has developed her own major, Scientific Communications. It combines elements of physics, biology, environmental science, and communications/journalism. It is exactly the kind of thing you can do at Adelphi – carve your own path.
What always surprises me about Ravyn’s thesis (and I am sure it sure surprises Ravyn too (correct me if I am wrong Ravyn)), is how much excitement this thesis topic generates beyond just the already meaty topics. Ravyn and her support team spent the last year worrying mostly about details of the project. She worked so hard to get high quality blog posts on current topics in science. Researching, editing, reviewing, and brain storming. And then she talks about this project with people, folks start discussing the big picture. I hear phrases like “So Interdisciplinary” and “Future of Education”. It is all very interesting.
A Scientific Communication minor, or track, or option is something Professor Cunningham and I are considering for the future.
It is really great getting the opportunity to work with Ravyn. She is an outstanding teammate and I am proud she is on my team. Go Ravyn!
I really enjoy my job and working with my team. Last summer was great! We had a daily research meeting where we went through all the different research projects in the group. Each day we had this great brainstorming discussion on topics Ravyn was writing about. It was neat, because we were thinking and discussing the big topics of the day while our country was going through a stressful time – and it wasn’t just discussion – It was Ravyn’s project. And then Ravyn would write something and we would always be so excited to read it and discuss it further.
If you know, you know!
