So last night the Adelphi Physics department meet virtually for our annual Sigma Pi Sigma Induction (honors society) and end-of-year graduation celebration. As usual the event was amazing! But I have to tell you it was extra special this year. While we celebrated the accomplishments of many Adelphi students, this year’s theme unexpectedly and serendipitously was about how powerful Adelphi women in physics are.

The evening event started with a keynote address by Mary Klement (’71, M.S. ’73). Mary Klement is an alumnus of our department. She has had a long, wonderful, and successful career in defense! She shared details and stories about her career path at a time when there were very few woman working in technology. I am going to admit that I was BLOWN AWAY! I know there were a few times I was laughing out loud and realized that I wasn’t muted (oops). But here was the best part, at the end of evening, right after Mary signed off, I was going to ask the students what they thought. But the students beat me to the point! They exclaimed that they LOVED Mary Klement’s talk! You never know how these events are going to go. Last Night was perfect! THANK YOU MARY!!

We were happy to induct Mary Klement and Shalauni Patel into Sigma Pi Sigma Honors Society.

We also announced our departmental graduates and acknowledged our departmental award winners!

One response to “2021 Physics Sigma Pi Sigma and Graduation Celebration: Adelphi Physics Women Rock!”

  1. […] I have been informed that a prominent alumnus of Adelphi University’s physics department, Mary Ann Barraco Klement has passed away. She has been such a friend to me and the department over the years. Just three years ago, Mary gave the keynote address at our Sigma Pi Sigma event! […]
