Katie Gifford, Kylie Goldade, Dominick Guadagno, and myself headed to award winning Patty Mueller’s physics classes today at Westbury High School. We brought in a bunch of equipment to help them do a circuits lab. It was a hoot! Even Dr. Paul Pelech helped out building a circuit or two! Thank you to everyone involved.
Last year, we began an experiment to see if we can share resources with the high schools to do some of the traditional labs. This was a third and last visit to Westbury for year one of the experiment. And there has been a learning curve for our team through out the process. But I think we are making an impact with the students. We are very excited to invite Westbury HS to Adelphi’s campus in April for the regular Lab – for – kids physics event.
One thing, I often get asked is how to I manage all of this extra work? Luckily this year, the answer is, I don’t. Katie Gifford has been in charge of preparing, designing, and organizing the visits for the high school students. She has been amazing! Last spring there was no lab coordinator and I had to do alot of the work myself. It was a lot and it took its tool on me. This year, I just show up and let Katie take over. Today she developed a nice cool experiment for Ohm’s law and resistor circuits. She got Kylie and Dom up to speed. And we just ran around the class helping them with the experiment. It was amazing! Katie is amazing!
