One of the best parts of my job is being the co-faculty advisor to the physics club. I love it so much that I even wrote an op-ed about it, Join the Club: The Benefits of Getting Students Involved with Departmental Clubs.

To me, the best part is working with the students. I love getting to know the officers very well. I particularly feel that I have developed a collegial bond with each of the presidents, vice presidents, and the other co-adviser Sean Bentley over the last few years. I ultimately have so much respect for them and the hard work they do.

Yesterday the Physics Club was honored at Adelphi’s Brown and Gold event – one of the best events all year. The awards show featured our physics club in two different ways: As an organization of excellence and with the Beyond Adelphi award for our interaction with SPS national office.

Here is the wonderful bit about the folks that run the club this year. They are completely self-sufficient. I would like to say I do something as the adviser. I don’t really. Every once and awhile I will show up late to a meeting and ask a bunch of questions. 95% of the time they have already worked out those details.

Carissa Giuliano is the outgoing president this year. She is a natural leader. Very calm. Stays on topic. Makes Physics Club fun. She is going to be one amazing high school physics teacher in a few years. Her team, Thomas, Olivia, Katie, and Sally have just been wonderful too. Even our first year student reps have been wonderful: Ishmael, Amanta, and Shalauni! They are completely in sync. It makes my job as advisor super easy and fun!

The best part is that they are just nice people. I remember when we were on our way to PhysCon last November and all the students were playing “Heads up”. I was very appreciative that they invited Rosie to come play with them and were wonderfully open to her presence. I keep saying physics is a community or a family. Its a bottom up thing. Dear Students THANK YOU!! YOU ROCK!!
