Middle mangers out there, are you feeling on the hook for everything? Does it feel like you are holding everything together with duct tape and string. One false move and everything is over. Yet no ones really cares, of course, until you mess up.
People seem unwilling to help you when you are in bind. Conversations like this are happening everywhere.
Manager: “Hey this is mission critical, can I have this paperwork done by end of day Tuesday, please?”
Co-Worker: “No, I work from home on Tuesday.”
Manager: Looks confused…
Co-Worker: blinks a couple of times and goes about the day.
Manager: Continues to look confused.
Deadlines seem even worse and the one person that can help has moved to Montana and only works remotely. They are available all day, of course, but their wifi only works some of the time, so you might not be able to get a hold of them today.
Your budget is being cut and yet everything costs twice as much as usual. The market doesn’t make sense. Housing prices are accelerating just as we are all taking pay cuts.
Your boss is stressed out and is going golfing for the week to chill out. Don’t worry he is leaving you in charge. Don’t mess it up.
Luckily my situation isn’t this bad – I got a pretty good deal. Somedays it feels like this though. I am definitely hearing horror stories from other people.
I would just like to say thank you to all those middle managers out there who are making this country run! Your work is appreciated!
