So tonight, we had our industry board meeting and it was wonderful. This evening, a group of industry leaders spent time with our students, giving them the “secret sauce” for being successful after college. There are so many different people to thank, I don’t even know where to begin.
A special thanks goes out to our Industry Board members. The students and faculty at Adelphi really appreciate your time and wisdom. A special thank you to:
- William Donovan, Thorlabs
- Joyce Chip Kilmer, Photonix
- Penelope Lewis, American Institute of Physics Publishing
- Jason E. Sanabia, Raith America
- Nancy Schreck, Central Semiconductor
I really appreciate each of them coming to spend time with our students. December 2021 is a difficult and busy time. Schedules kept changing, people got sick, and even one of our usual industry partners is on their "second honeymoon" in Hawaii! (I think that is the correct use of that phrase.) We have such a great group of industry leaders to work with. They are all patient and flexible. And the students LOVE you all!
This year we tried some different. As part of the industry board meeting, we invited two alumni to come and speak about their experiences with the students as part of the general discussion. I would like to send a thank you to Martin Disla (’14 Frequency Electronics) and Brian Kaufman (’16 Stony Brook University). It was absolutely wonderful to meet with you tonight. I know the students appreciated hearing your stories.
A special thanks goes to Professors Sean Bentley and Kevin Liang for their help moderating the discussions. And of course a special thanks goes out to James St. John for his usual technical know how and planning ability.
And to our students, THANK YOU! I am so proud of each of you and the way you reflect on me, the other professors, the department, and Adelphi University. ROCK ON!
Pictures are at the bottom.
This was a difficult event to plan. Some of our board members were virtual. Some were in person. And it was general organized chaos. It was a PERFECT event!
At 6:30 we had dinner. The students spoke with in person industry board members and our alumni. Then there were some lab tours. And finally we moved to a round robin discussion panel with three breakout rooms (half virtually and half in person). It worked! The students rotated through and talked with each of the industry leaders.
You could feel the level of career excitement and discussion. Two students came running out of a session and said, “I AM GOING TO WORK FOR COMPANY X”. Another student walked in my office asking me question after question to launch her career.
That’s all I got. Time for bed.
We have a wonderful community and I love it!
